about westcott courses
Westcott Courses accommodates the online education needs of K12 schools, home schools, colleges, universities, and individuals in the general public. We specialize in math courses, but also offer a wide variety of general education courses, such as English, psychology, chemistry, and several biological science courses, which are used as prerequisites for health related fields such as nursing, physician’s assistant, pre-medicine, dental, and pharmacology.

Each course is designed by a teacher from a California Community College or California State University who holds at least a master's degree in their field of study (or related). Our teachers teach the exact same course at either a state university or community college campus. We work closely with University of Massachusetts Global (UMass Global), which is accredited by the WSCUC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), to create online curriculum that meets or exceeds college requirements for remedial and transferable courses.

The History of Omega Math Courses

When Nancy Davis first started teaching in the late 1980's, she became interested in how students learned math. She spent years working on finding the most understandable way to present each topic from general education mathematics courses. Students always told her that her lectures made things seem easy, but when they got home they said they forgot what was said in class and the light bulb would turn off! Many topics in math are difficult for students to fully understand the first time around, and need to have material demonstrated more than once. Curriculum time constraints in the college classroom make this impossible, so Ms. Davis began writing booklets to send home with her students.

Ms. Davis sent the lessons home with her students, and asked them to go over the lessons and let her know where they got lost. These trouble markers let Ms. Davis know where students needed extra help and a better explanation to help grasp difficult concepts. The edited booklets would then be sent home with the next semester's students. This continued until there were no more questions, and students reported they understood the entire section.

Omega Math in 1996!
Every booklet included many examples with clear explanations for each type of problem. The lessons started out with the easiest example and then moved to the more advanced problems. At each topic level, there were problems for the students to work out. After the students worked out a problem on their own, the concept was cemented into their long term memory. These booklets were used as the basis for our first online math courses in 1996 when the internet was first available. Even though thousands of students use our online curriculum, Westcott Courses gets very few questions because of the depth of our content. Many students, no matter their age, have benefited from the online courses, and have been able to advance in school and move towards their educational goals.

In 1996, Omega Math was born with the internet becoming widely available. At first, we solely offered math classes through Cal Poly State University. In 2012, we began to offer a wider range of courses in other disciplines such as English, psychology, chemistry, and biological sciences. We knew our name no longer fit our growing company, and we evolved to Westcott Courses.

Omega Math is a proud part of Westcott Courses. Omega Math still writes math courses as well as software for our site and for other colleges and universities.

About the Founder of Omega Math and Westcott Courses

Nancy Davis started her higher education journey at a community college where she earned an Associates of Science in Mathematics and Science. She received her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, and then continued on to earn her graduate degree in Pure Mathematics, and another in Teaching Mathematics.

Ms. Davis has been an instructor of Mathematics and Computer Science since 1989. She has taught at community colleges as well as at the university level at California Polytechnic State University. Her range of math instruction is Basic Math, all levels of Algebra, Calculus, Finite Mathematics, as well as courses in Computer Science.

Each year, Ms. Davis has excellent evaluations from students and faculty alike. Students often comment on how delighted they are with her unique teaching methods, and claim they understand math for the first time in their lives.

Many students suggested that she write a textbook, so these comments prompted Ms. Davis to start writing the booklets for her students. In 1996, California Polytechnic asked her to write an online math course, and that led to other colleges asking for other courses. To date, Ms. Davis has written twelve complete online courses in mathematics.

Ms. Davis retired early from California Polytechnic State University and is the president and director of Westcott Courses and Omega Math.
